Welcome,
These pages record information given to me by one I. N. Hasom a person of mixed Persian and European decent who went by
the name James M. Gleason in the city of Minneapolis where he resided. over a period of 7 years he taught me a system of philosophy,
religion and self defence that he maintain went back to Sharrukin the Second of Assyria...
This information is purported to be the teachings of a sect called the Datu that are purported to have existed in small
numbers all these centuries, passing the info down among family and friends. I have spent nearly 20 years now seeking to prove
or disprove these teachings by study of historical and archeological records and frankly I cannot find sufficiant evidence
to prove nor disprove anything.
I have practiced the teachings givin to me and they have had a positive impact on my life and proven themselves valid
in use if not in fact and my research continues.
Assembling my research has led me to the following conclusions.
1. The cosmology mythos of the Datu has a distinct Gnostic flavor and seeks to be an analogy of the human spirit's struggle
to grow rather than a myth of the beginning of things. The existence of 2 versions of the mythos that differ moderately indicates
one as a mythos and one as analogy and of later origin. One is gnostic in nature and seems to attempt to unify a number of
different myths in one holistic tale, while acting as an analogy for spiritual growth, the other is much more in line with
the traditional myth of the creation in the ANE and seem to be just that; a creation myth. I hope to have the version that
I suppose to be a straight forward creation myth on here by July.
2. The philosophy is much like many other holistic polarity based philosophies in that it demonstrates a pair of diametricly
opposed powers that fall in to harmoney and unity as a single entity (yin - yang, light - dark, in - yo, positive - negative
(as in magnet poles). Its icons are closely connected to the geomantic figures used in Raml, Ifa, sikidy and European geomancy.
It presents zoroastrian influences in that it has a light - darkpolarity, but is more like Taoist thought in that it does
not make these polarities good and evil. The geomantic figures in the system are not influenenced by yoruba beliefs of Ifa
and instead seen to have a closer connection to Raml of Arabia.
3. If invented by someone or several persons and based in the myths of Sharrukin II and the Ancient Near Eastern mythos:
These persons brought together an amazing collection of information on history, holistic thought, gnostic philosophy,
Raml, Ifa, sikidy, geomancy, astronomy, astrology, cosmology, anthropology, mythology, Archeology, internal martial technique,
magic, religions, Sumerian - Akkadian - Aramaic language etc. etc. and linked them in a holistic fashion. Such an individual
or individuals would have needed time and resources of a rather substantial nature to put together so many different diciplines.
Thus it is most likely that such inventors would have been a group rather than an individual and would have functioned as
a lodge or society. Such a society would have been likely to have emerged during the period of popularity of such societies
in the 1700s or 1800s. The first real work on the archeology of Assyria started in the 1800s, so that would have been available
to persons of a scholarly position (who were often members of such societies).
4. If truly birthed and grown as purported, the system would undergo a series of changes due to its purported distance
in time and location from the point of its claimed origin. Languages inherent to the system but defunct in society for a
long time would change according to use, into a new dialect. Simplification takes place in usage. This happens when a small
cell of people use a language only among themselves. As bits of oral tradition pass from person to person, aspects of the
information change according to each new reception and transmission. Points are embelished or diminished according to the
understanding of the people involved. The core aspects tend to remain but the specifics can alter tremendously until written
down. The Akkadian used by the Datu is a language that is altered in aspect such as indicated above. The language was undergoing
a simplification at the time of the purported birth of the Datu and the body of Datu Akkadian is in line with a small group
using it and continuing that simplification. Its role as ritual / technical language further reduces the need for complex
gramatical ideas, however it still requires formation of basic sentences with grammatical indicators of time, gender, number,
and inquiry.
5. When the structure of the Datu teachings are stripped of cultural labels and viewed only as archetypes, the structure
is sound and holistic. So for instance we can take the notion of a structure and strip away the name of the god that is associated
with it from a ANE standpoint, we can then look at the universal achetype devoid of specific cultural influence. When stripped
of cultural specifics the system seems like an organizer for archetypes of human thought and natural phenomena. The purpose
of the structure seems to be biased towards seeking a middle path of temperence and balance while maintaining awareness of
individual polartities.
6. The martial teachings are internal (soft) in nature and culivate inner strength,.If they were invented we have one
a only a few likely scenarios. The first is that it is an incomplete study of another system or systems.
In this case it would be likely that it is rooted in Ba Gua, and Hsing I,In matter of fact, all postures and fighting
concepts of Tibir are based on the geomantic figures. Since these figures are somewhat like the figures of I Ching it lends
itself to a connection to Ba Gua since Ba Gua is based in these I Ching figures. Another likelyhood would be indonesian origin
(Silat). Indeed the word Datu means 'the elder of a family' in Indonesian and this is the title given to the head of a Silat
style.
The second possibility is that it was invented and refined from scratch based on the same holistic connection to the geomantic
figures (I.E. study a figure and then develope physical postures and motons that mimic it). Tibir is a real conundrum in that
it has proven its worth to me in both street defense and sparring with other styles. It is quite complete but as with all
other aspects of the Datu its origins are met with credulity and I cannot prove nor disprove them.
7. Since this writing this website many years ago, this website has exposed the Datu information to alot of people and
since these people have made inquiries about what it is, they have had only this rather poorly written and organized page
to go on. I have set about to go through these pages again and clean them up (spelling errors, explanations about information,
addition of variations within the creation myth etc). After 20 years of trying to prove or disprove it I have reached the conclusion
that I can not do so and have shifted my focus to identification of tibir and have given over the custodianship of the other
Datu information to another who has the interest. I will fill in the rest of the info that I have and complete these pages
for the new custodian and then focus on my Tibir.
I feel that if people are going to find their way here to look into the Datu or Tibir, that this site should at least
be complete and undetstandable
